Activated Charcoal for Plants: What It Actually Does (And What's a Myth)
The short answer: horticultural activated charcoal is a porous, adsorbent carbon that keeps a pot's root zone clean it binds the organic byproducts of decomposition, resists souring in moisture-retentive corners of the pot, and adds permanent, non-compacting structure. What it is not is a drainage layer, a fertilizer, or a cure for overwatering. Used correctly at 5-10% of a mix, it's one of the highest-value amendments in container growing.
Charcoal is having a moment in Indian plant content, and as usual the truth is better than the hype but smaller than it.
What is activated charcoal, and how is it different from regular charcoal?
All charcoal is wood (or other biomass) carbonised by heating without oxygen. Activation is a second, high-temperature processing step that blasts open the carbon's internal structure, multiplying its internal surface area enormously. A few grams of properly activated carbon contain an internal surface area measured in football fields. That surface is what does the work: it adsorbs binds molecules onto itself.
This is why grade matters:
- BBQ charcoal / briquettes: never use these. Briquettes contain binders and accelerants that are actively harmful in a pot.
- Plain lump wood charcoal ("biochar" sold loosely): real but weak unactivated, low surface area, often dusty and alkaline. Some benefit, a fraction of the adsorption.
- Horticultural activated charcoal: activated, sized for substrate use (chunks, not powder), and processed for purity. This is the grade the claims below actually apply to. Activation quality varies it's why we process and grade ours specifically for substrate use rather than repacking generic carbon.
What does charcoal actually do in a potting mix?
Three real, physical mechanisms:
1. It adsorbs the byproducts of decomposition. Every mix containing organic matter is slowly rotting that's what organic matter does. Decomposition releases organic acids and compounds that, in a poorly drained pot, accumulate and "sour" the root zone (you've smelled it: that swampy odour from an old, wet pot). Charcoal's vast internal surface binds these compounds, keeping the root environment cleaner for longer. This is its headline job.
2. It adds permanent structure. Charcoal chunks don't decompose on any timescale that matters and don't compact. As the organic fraction of a mix breaks down and slumps, charcoal (like other mineral-stable components) holds air channels open. In Indian heat, where organic matter breaks down faster, this longevity matters more.
3. It moderates the root-zone environment. Its porous structure holds a moisture film while never becoming waterlogged itself, and its surface gives beneficial microbes a stable home the same logic behind biochar use in agriculture for centuries.
What charcoal does NOT do
This list matters as much as the last one:
- It is not a drainage layer. The old advice of "charcoal at the bottom of a pot without holes" is a myth that refuses to die. A layer of coarse material at the bottom of a pot doesn't improve drainage it raises the saturated zone closer to the roots (the "perched water table" effect). No material at the bottom of a sealed pot makes overwatering safe. Charcoal belongs mixed through the substrate, not layered under it.
- It is not a fertilizer. Charcoal adds no meaningful nutrition. It manages the root environment; feeding is a separate subject.
- It does not "purify" water already in the pot in any ongoing, filter-like sense. Its adsorption capacity is finite vast, but finite. It buys the root zone time and cleanliness, not immunity.
- It will not fix a fundamentally bad mix. Stirring charcoal into dense, waterlogged cocopeat improves it marginally. The base structure of the mix is still the main event.
How much charcoal should you add, and what size?
- Rate: 5-10% by volume of the total mix. Beyond ~10% you're displacing components that hold moisture and anchor roots, with diminishing returns on the charcoal's benefits.
- Size: chunks roughly 5-15 mm for most container mixes. Powder is the wrong product for pots it clogs air spaces, defeats the structural benefit, and washes through. (Powdered activated carbon is a filtration product, not a substrate one.)
- Where it earns its keep most: terrariums and any closed or semi-closed planting (its sweetening role is near-mandatory there), orchid and epiphyte mixes, aroid mixes, and any pot you intend to keep going for years between repots.
- Prep: rinse before use to remove dust, like any substrate component.
If you're using a properly engineered substrate, note that charcoal may already be in it it's a standard component of our mixes for exactly the reasons above. The standalone amendment is for upgrading your own blends or refreshing long-running pots.
Does charcoal change soil pH?
Mildly, and it depends on the source material and processing. Most horticultural charcoals lean slightly alkaline. At the 5-10% inclusion rate this effect is small and buffered by the rest of the mix; it is not a tool for deliberately raising pH, and at sane rates it won't push a mix out of the comfortable range for common houseplants.

Can I use BBQ charcoal for plants? No. Briquettes contain binders and chemical accelerants harmful to roots. Even plain lump charcoal lacks activation and is often dusty and excessively alkaline. Use horticultural-grade activated charcoal.
Is activated charcoal the same as biochar? Related, not identical. Biochar is carbonised biomass used as a soil amendment, usually un-activated. Activated charcoal has undergone an additional high-temperature process that vastly increases its internal surface area and adsorption capacity.
Does charcoal at the bottom of a pot help drainage? No this is the most persistent myth in container gardening. Coarse layers at the bottom of a pot raise the waterlogged zone closer to the roots. Mix charcoal through the substrate instead, and use pots with drainage holes.
How much activated charcoal should I add to potting mix? 5-10% by volume, in 5-15 mm chunks. More than that displaces useful components without adding benefit.
How long does activated charcoal last in a pot? The structural benefit is effectively permanent it doesn't decompose or compact. The adsorption capacity is finite and is gradually consumed over months to years depending on how wet and organic-rich the mix is. Refresh it when you repot.
Is activated charcoal good for all plants? At 5-10% it benefits virtually any container mix. It's most valuable for terrariums, orchids, aroids, and long-lived pots where root-zone cleanliness and structural stability pay off over time.
