Why Most Indoor Plants in India Don't Get the Substrate They Need

Walk into any nursery in India and ask for “potting mix.” You will get one bag. It does not matter if you are growing a cactus or a Calathea, a Monstera or a Money Plant, the same mix goes into every pot.

This is the first problem Terrene House was built to solve.

A Monstera deliciosa evolved climbing through the understory of Central American rainforests, its roots reaching for loose, fast-draining, organically rich debris on the forest floor. A Haworthia evolved in the rocky mineral scree of South African deserts, its roots adapted to near-zero organic matter and rapid drainage. Putting both plants in the same substrate is not a small compromise, it is asking two organisms with opposite evolutionary requirements to thrive in identical conditions.

Terrene House formulates a distinct substrate for each major plant family, based on the actual soil physics and chemistry of where that plant evolved. This page explains the science, ingredient by ingredient, problem by problem, behind every bag we make.

Failure modes

The Six Problems Every Indoor Plant Faces in India

Before we talk about ingredients, we need to talk about failure modes. After years of formulation work and lab testing with the University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK Bengaluru, we identified six problems responsible for the vast majority of indoor plant deaths in Indian homes. Every Terrene House substrate is engineered to solve all six, simultaneously, for the specific plant family it is designed for.

  1. Problem 01

    Overwatering and Root Rot

    This is the single leading cause of indoor plant death in India. Standard substrates compact over time. As they compact, the air pockets that plant roots need to breathe disappear. Water sits in the pot with nowhere to go. Roots, which need oxygen as much as they need water, begin to suffocate. Within 48 to 72 hours of sitting in waterlogged substrate, root rot sets in. By the time leaves start yellowing or drooping, the damage below the soil line is often already severe.

    Every mix contains a calculated ratio of macro-pore drainage materials, engineered particles that create permanent air channels through the substrate. These channels do not compress under the weight of wet soil. Water moves through them by gravity, draining out of the pot within 60 to 90 seconds of watering. The substrate physically cannot hold standing water around the root zone.

  2. Problem 02

    Underwatering and Substrate Hydrophobicity

    Here is a problem almost no one talks about: substrates made primarily from coco coir develop hydrophobicity over time, usually within 8 to 12 months. The fibres develop a waxy surface that repels water instead of absorbing it. When you water a hydrophobic substrate, the water runs straight down the inside wall of the pot and out the drainage hole. You see water coming out the bottom and assume the plant has been watered. But the root ball itself, the part that actually matters, is bone dry.

    This is why so many houseplants in India look “underwatered” even when their owners are watering regularly. It is not a watering schedule problem. It is a substrate problem.

    Our proprietary Mineral Lock system permanently coats every coir fibre in the substrate with a moisture-retentive mineral film during the very first watering. This film cannot develop the waxy hydrophobic coating that plagues standard coir-based substrates.     Nutrient Leaching, the three-Month Nutrition Window

    Most potting mixes that include compost or organic fertiliser release their nutrients within 6 to 10 weeks. After that, every time you water, you are flushing whatever nutrients remain straight out through the drainage hole. The substrate becomes nutritionally empty, but it still looks like soil, so most plant owners never realise their plant has been sitting in an inert medium for months.

    Specific mixes incorporate Zeolite, a naturally occurring volcanic mineral with one of the highest cation exchange capacities of any material on earth. Think of it as a cation battery. As nutrients are released, Zeolite captures and holds them electrostatically, releasing them back to plant roots on demand instead of letting them wash away. This extends the effective nutritional window from 2 months to 6 to 8 months.

    Mold, Fungus, and Fungus Gnats

    Fungus gnats are, by a wide margin, the most common pest complaint among Indian indoor plant owners. Their larvae thrive in moist organic matter, and most commercial substrates arrive from the factory already carrying enough residual moisture for gnat populations to establish before the bag even reaches your home.

Combined with Activated Charcoal rated at 700 IV (Iodine Value, a measurement of adsorption capacity more than double standard horticultural charcoal), our substrates create a microbial environment where beneficial bacteria and fungi outcompete the pathogenic species that cause root disease.

  5. Problem 05

    pH Drift and Nutrient Lockout

    This is the most invisible of all five problems. As organic matter in a substrate breaks down and fertiliser salts accumulate, pH drifts, usually downward, becoming more acidic. By the six-month mark, many commercial substrates sit at a pH where phosphorus becomes chemically locked and unavailable to plant roots, where manganese becomes toxic, and where iron uptake stops working properly. The plant shows deficiency symptoms, yellowing, stunted growth, leaf distortion, even though the owner is feeding it correctly. The fertiliser is going in. The plant just cannot access it anymore.

On first watering, it triggers a sodium purge, flushing out the sodium that raw coir naturally carries from coconut processing.     The Rotting Smell Nobody Talks About

    There's a smell every plant owner in India has experienced. You water your plant, and a day or two later a faint rotten-egg or sour, swampy odour rises from the pot. Most people assume something is wrong with the plant, or panic that they've somehow introduced disease. In reality it's the substrate itself, and it reveals something more serious happening below the surface.

    Every substrate contains billions of bacteria. That's normal and necessary; they're part of what makes soil work. As long as there's oxygen available in the substrate, these bacteria break down organic matter quietly and produce no smell at all. The problem starts the moment a substrate compacts or stays waterlogged. When the air pockets fill with water instead of air, oxygen runs out within hours, and an entirely different population takes over: bacteria that don't need oxygen to survive. These anaerobic bacteria break down organic matter through a different chemical pathway, and the byproducts are hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and organic acids, the exact smells customers complain about.

    Here's the part that matters most: the smell isn't the problem. It's the warning. By the time you can smell it, the roots in that same oxygen-starved zone are already under stress. The odour usually appears before any visible sign of distress in the leaves, which means most plant owners don't know anything is wrong until the damage is already underway.

    This isn't a separate fix; it's a direct result of the same drainage architecture we engineer into every mix to prevent root rot. Every Terrene House substrate is built with a calculated ratio of macro-pore materials, Perlite, LECA and Activated Charcoal, that create permanent air channels through the substrate.     Our Activated Charcoal (700 IV) plays a second role here too. Its microporous surface, more than double the adsorption capacity of standard horticultural charcoal, creates a dense habitat for beneficial aerobic bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, giving the good microbial population a head start and letting it outcompete anything pathogenic before it can establish.

The Ingredients, and Why Each One Earns Its Place

Every material in a Terrene House substrate is there because of a specific, measurable function. Nothing is filler.

The Foundation

Cocopeat

Coconut coir pith forms the structural base of every Terrene House mix. It is renewable, India-sourced, and has naturally excellent water retention. Its one weakness, the sodium it carries from processing and the hydrophobicity it develops over time, is exactly what our Active Brain and Mineral Lock systems are engineered to neutralise.

The Drainage Architecture

Perlite and LECA

Perlite is volcanic glass, expanded under heat into lightweight, porous granules. LECA is clay, fired into hard, spherical, porous pellets. Both create permanent macro-pores, air channels that do not collapse under the weight of wet substrate. Different mixes use different ratios of these two depending on how much drainage the target plant family needs, and for fluoride-sensitive species like Dracaena and Cycas, LECA is specifically prioritised, since unlike Perlite it carries zero fluoride.

The Cation Battery

Zeolite

A crystalline volcanic mineral with a molecular pore structure that functions as a natural ion-exchange system. Zeolite captures and holds nutrient cations, particularly potassium, critical for flowering and frond development, against leaching, while also acting as a slow-release internal moisture reserve. Mixes formulated for dryland and epiphytic species rely on Zeolite as their primary moisture-retention mechanism, since these plants evolved without the deep organic moisture reserves that forest-floor species depend on.

The Purifier

Activated Charcoal (700 IV)

The Iodine Value of activated charcoal measures its adsorption surface area. Standard horticultural charcoal in India sits at 200 to 400 IV. Terrene House uses 700 IV charcoal as a guaranteed minimum specification, meaning every gram has more than double the functional surface area. This charcoal adsorbs chlorine and chloramine from tap water on every watering, sequesters the ethylene gas that stressed roots produce, buffers pH toward neutral, and creates a dense habitat for beneficial microbes.

The Nutrition Engine

Vermicompost

Worm-processed organic matter, rich in plant-available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, plus humic acids that chelate micronutrients and prevent lockout. The proportion of Vermicompost varies dramatically across our range, from minimal in mixes formulated for oligotrophic, drought-adapted species, to our highest concentration in mixes built for heavy-feeding flowering plants.

The Moisture Film

Mineral Lock

Our proprietary clay-based system. At precisely calibrated concentrations, it deposits a permanent hygroscopic film across coir fibres, the mechanism that solves the hydrophobicity problem permanently. It also forms the alkaline anchor of our pH buffer system. Concentration is carefully capped: too much, and the substrate would compact into an impermeable mass when watered; too little, and hydrophobicity returns within a year. We have calculated the precise threshold and never cross it.

Our proprietary blend that performs the sodium purge, the first-watering pH calibration, and the long-term pH stability function described above. Why Generic Potting Mixes Sell You Water

A soil-based potting mix is the wrong physics for a container. It compacts within weeks, holds water in a solid airless block, and buries roots in exactly the anaerobic conditions described above. Generic soilless mixes fix the weight but not the design: one recipe for every plant, no engineered drainage architecture, no buffering, and no lab data behind the bag.
