Aroid Potting Mix in India: The Complete Guide

The short answer: monstera, philodendron, anthurium and alocasia don't grow in soil in the wild they grow in loose, airy leaf litter and on tree bark. In an Indian apartment, that means they need a chunky, fast-draining substrate with high air-filled porosity, not garden soil or ordinary potting mix. Most aroids that die indoors in India die from suffocated roots, not neglect.

This guide explains what aroid roots actually need, why typical Indian potting mixes fail them, and how to judge any mix ours or anyone's by the numbers that matter.

Why do aroids keep dying in regular potting mix?

Because regular potting mix is built for water retention, and aroid roots are built for air.

In nature, aroids are climbers and epiphytes. Their roots run through decomposing leaf litter on the forest floor or grip bark metres above it. In both places, the root zone is mostly air pockets that happen to hold a film of moisture not a dense, wet mass.

Put those same roots in a heavy, compacted mix and three things happen in sequence:

  1. Water displaces air. After watering, a dense mix stays saturated for days. Roots respire they need oxygen and in a waterlogged pot they slowly drown.
  2. Weakened roots invite rot. Pythium and other root-rot pathogens thrive in anaerobic conditions. Yellowing lower leaves and mushy stems are usually the visible end of a process that started weeks earlier underground.
  3. The mix compacts further with every watering. Fine particles settle, air spaces collapse, and the pot gets worse over time.

What the roots feel, the leaves will say. Brown edges, yellowing, stalled growth these are root-zone symptoms long before they are leaf problems.

What should a good aroid mix actually contain?

A proper aroid substrate is engineered around structure, not richness. The components matter less than the physical behaviour they create, but a serious mix is built from things like:

  • Coarse bark or husk chips the skeleton of the mix. Creates permanent air channels and gives climbing roots something to grip.
  • A mineral structural component stabilises the mix so it doesn't collapse as organic matter breaks down.
  • Horticultural activated charcoal keeps the root zone sweet by adsorbing the byproducts of decomposition.
  • A controlled fine fraction just enough to hold a moisture film without clogging the air spaces.

What it should not be is dominated by fine cocopeat or compost. Those ingredients are cheap and hold enormous amounts of water which is exactly the problem.

What numbers should you look for in an aroid mix?

Two measurements describe almost everything about how a mix behaves in a pot. Very few brands publish them. Ask for them.

Air-filled porosity (AFP) the percentage of the mix that is still air immediately after watering. This is the single best predictor of aroid health.

  • Below 10%: typical of dense cocopeat/compost mixes. High rot risk for aroids.
  • 10–18%: acceptable, but watch your watering.
  • 20% and above: what aroids actually want. Our Aroid Alchemist substrate is independently lab-tested at 24% air-filled porosity.

Water-holding capacity (WHC) how much moisture the mix retains for the plant between waterings. The goal is balance: enough reserve that you aren't watering daily, not so much that the pot stays swampy. Aroid Alchemist holds 1,620 g of water per kilogram — roughly 1.6 times its own weight held in the particles, while the spaces between them stay open and breathing.

High AFP and meaningful WHC at the same time is the entire engineering problem of a good aroid mix. Either one alone is easy. Both together is what you're paying for and it's why these numbers are worth asking any brand for. Ours are tested at the Department of Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, University of Agricultural Sciences (GKVK), Bengaluru, using the standard FAO method. No other Indian substrate brand publishes independent figures like these.

Why does the Indian climate change the equation?

Most aroid-mix advice online is written for Europe and North America heated homes, dry air, soft water. Indian conditions break those recipes in three ways:

Humidity swings are extreme. A Bengaluru monsoon and a Delhi May are different planets. A mix that's "moisture-retentive" in a European winter is a swamp in Mumbai's August. Indian aroid mixes need to err drier and airier, because the air will often do the humidifying for you.

Hard water is the norm. Borewell and municipal water across most Indian cities carries heavy dissolved mineral loads. In a dense mix, those salts accumulate around roots. An open, fast-draining structure lets you flush the pot properly water thoroughly, let it rest a few minutes, then water again so the second pass carries dissolved salts out of the drainage holes.

Heat accelerates everything. Decomposition, fungal growth, gnat breeding cycles all faster at 30°C than at 18°C. Organic-heavy mixes break down and collapse faster in India than the imported recipes assume. Structural stability matters more here, not less.

Can you just make your own aroid mix?

You can, and for one or two plants experimenting is genuinely fun. But go in with honest math:

  • Buying bark, perlite, charcoal and the rest separately means buying each in quantities far larger than you need. The per-pot cost of a DIY mix usually lands higher than a well-priced ready mix once you account for what sits unused.
  • Ratios off the internet are written for other climates (see above).
  • You can't measure AFP at home. You're mixing blind and finding out via your plants.

If you have twenty aroids and enjoy the craft, mix your own. If you have a few prized plants and want a known, tested result, buy an engineered mix and judge it by its published numbers.

How do you repot an aroid into a new substrate?

  1. Water the plant a day before hydrated roots handle disturbance better.
  2. Remove as much of the old, dense mix as comes away easily. Don't violently strip the root ball; tease it.
  3. Trim anything mushy or black back to firm tissue.
  4. Pot into the new substrate without pressing it down hard. Settle it by tapping the pot, not by compacting. The air spaces are the product don't crush them.
  5. Water in two stages: saturate fully, wait 5–10 minutes, then water again until it runs clear from the drainage holes. This settles the substrate around the roots and flushes fines and dissolved salts through.
  6. Hold off fertilising for 3–4 weeks while new roots establish.

Expect a brief sulk, then noticeably faster growth as roots colonise a root zone that finally breathes.


FAQ

What is the best potting mix for monstera in India? A chunky, fast-draining aroid substrate with air-filled porosity of 25% or higher. Avoid mixes dominated by fine cocopeat or compost monstera roots need oxygen, and dense mixes stay waterlogged in Indian humidity.

Can I use regular potting soil for philodendron? You can, but it's the most common reason philodendrons develop yellow leaves and root rot indoors. Philodendrons are climbers adapted to airy, bark-rich root zones, not dense soil.

Is cocopeat good for aroids? As a minor component, fine. As the base of the mix, no fine cocopeat holds too much water and compacts over time, collapsing the air spaces aroid roots depend on. This is the single most common flaw in potting mixes sold in India.

How often should I water an aroid in a chunky mix? Less often than you'd think, and more thoroughly when you do. Let the top few centimetres dry, then water in two passes until it drains freely. A high-AFP mix makes overwatering on any given day almost impossible frequency becomes the only thing you can get wrong.

What is air-filled porosity and why does it matter? AFP is the percentage of a substrate that remains air immediately after watering. It's the best single measure of whether roots can breathe. Aroids want 20% or more; most generic Indian potting mixes test well under 10%. If a brand can't tell you their AFP, they haven't measured it. (Aroid Alchemist is independently lab-tested at 24%.)
