The short answer: root rot is the decay of roots in a pot that stays too wet roots starved of oxygen die, then fungi and bacteria move in and accelerate the collapse. It's the most common killer of houseplants, it's almost always caused by a mix that holds too much water, and it's preventable. Caught early, many plants can be saved. The permanent fix isn't watering less it's a substrate that can't stay waterlogged.

The cruel part is how it hides. By the time the leaves tell you something's wrong, the damage underground is usually well advanced. So the first skill is reading it early.

What are the signs of root rot?

The signals show up top-down, but the cause is bottom-up. Watch for:

  • Yellowing leaves, often starting lower and spreading, that don't recover after watering.
  • Soft, mushy stems at the base, or a plant that feels loose in its pot.
  • Wilting despite wet soil the giveaway. A thirsty-looking plant sitting in damp mix means the roots can no longer take up water, not that it needs more.
  • A sour, swampy smell from the pot.
  • Slow or stalled growth for no obvious reason.

The confirmation is in the roots themselves. Healthy roots are firm and pale white, cream, or tan. Rotted roots are brown or black, soft, and slip apart or come away mushy when touched. What causes root rot?

Overwatering gets the blame, but that's only half the story. Root rot is really a too-much-water-for-too-long problem, and the medium controls that as much as the watering can does.

The usual chain:

  3. Roots, deprived of oxygen, begin to die.
  4. Opportunistic fungi and bacteria colonise the weakened, dying roots and accelerate the decay.

Other contributors: pots with no drainage holes, decorative covers that trap drained water, oversized pots holding a large volume of slow-drying mix, and watering on a fixed schedule regardless of whether the mix is dry. But the common thread is almost always a root zone that stays wet.

How do you save a plant with root rot?

If some firm, healthy root remains, there's a real chance. Move quickly:

  1. Unpot it and gently remove as much of the wet old mix as you can from the roots.
  2. Trim all rotted roots cut back every brown, soft, mushy root to firm, pale tissue with clean scissors. Don't leave dead root in place; it keeps spreading.
  3. Remove affected leaves to reduce the load on the damaged root system, especially anything yellow or mushy.

  5. Use a clean pot with drainage holes, sized to the plant not much bigger than the root ball.
  6. Water sparingly at first, then only when the mix has dried appropriately. Let new roots establish in air, not in standing water.

Then wait. A rescued plant sulks before it recovers. Don't compensate with more water that's what caused it.

How do you prevent root rot for good?

You change the variable you control most reliably: the medium.

The single most effective prevention is a substrate with high enough air-filled porosity that it physically can't stay waterlogged. In an airy, fast-draining mix, even an over-enthusiastic watering schedule drains and re-aerates before roots suffocate the mix forgives the mistake. In a dense, water-hoarding mix, perfect watering discipline is the only thing standing between your plant and rot, and discipline slips.

The rest is straightforward: pots with drainage holes, no water left standing in decorative covers, pot sizes matched to the plant, and watering by checking the mix rather than the calendar.
