Perlite vs Pumice (and the Rest): Which Adds Better Drainage?
The short answer: perlite, pumice, LECA, grit and sand all "improve drainage," but they're not interchangeable. Perlite is the cheap, ultra-light aerator that floats and breaks down; pumice is the heavier, more durable mineral that aerates and holds a little water and nutrients; LECA is a clay ball used mainly in semi-hydro; grit and coarse sand add weight and drainage to gritty mixes. The right one depends on the plant and the job.
"Add some drainage material" is common advice that skips the part that matters which material, and why.
What does perlite do?
Perlite is volcanic glass heated until it pops like popcorn into lightweight white granules full of air pockets. It's the most common aeration amendment because it's cheap and extremely light, and it creates air space in a mix without adding much weight.
Its limits: it holds almost no water and no nutrients, it's so light it tends to float to the surface over time and with watering, and it crushes and breaks down into dust eventually. The white specks can also look out of place to some growers. Good for: a quick, affordable aeration boost in most mixes.
What does pumice do?
Pumice is a naturally porous volcanic rock similar origin to perlite, very different behaviour. It's heavier and harder, so it doesn't float or break down, its porous structure holds a small amount of water and nutrients while still aerating, and that weight helps anchor top-heavy plants like large succulents.
Its limits: it's more expensive and less widely available in India than perlite, and heavier to ship. Good for: succulents, cacti, bonsai, and any long-lived pot where you want durable, non-floating structure. (Many growers consider it the premium choice over perlite for exactly these reasons.)
What about LECA?
LECA (lightweight expanded clay aggregate) is clay fired into round, porous balls. It's used mostly in semi-hydroponics growing plants in clay balls with a water reservoir rather than soil and as a chunky component in some substrate and orchid mixes. What about sand and grit?
Coarse sand and fine grit add weight and fast drainage to mineral-heavy mixes useful for succulents and cacti. The rules: use coarse river sand or horticultural grit, never fine builder's sand (which sets like cement and destroys drainage) and never beach sand (salt damages roots). How do these compare to zeolite and charcoal?
They solve overlapping but distinct problems. Perlite and pumice are about aeration and drainage. Zeolite is about buffering holding water and nutrients and releasing them slowly. A well-built mix often uses several together, each doing its own job which is the whole point of engineering a substrate rather than dumping one "drainage material" into soil.
Which should you actually use?
- General aeration on a budget: perlite.
- Durable, non-floating aeration; succulents, bonsai, long-lived pots: pumice.
- Semi-hydro or chunky structural component: LECA.
- Gritty drainage for succulents/cacti: coarse river sand or horticultural grit (never builder's or beach sand).
- Moisture and nutrient buffering: zeolite (different job pairs with the above).
And remember the drainage-layer myth: none of these belong in a layer at the bottom of a pot that raises the waterlogged zone toward the roots. They work mixed through the substrate.
