Best Soil for Snake Plant & ZZ Plant in India
The short answer: snake plants (Sansevieria) and ZZ plants (Zamioculcas) are drought-adapted plants that store water in their roots and rhizomes. They need a fast-draining, gritty mix that dries out between waterings. The one thing that reliably kills them is a moisture-retentive medium that keeps their roots wet and most generic Indian potting mixes do exactly that.
These two are sold as "indestructible," and they nearly are but the most common way people destroy them is the same: the wrong soil plus a watering can.
Why do snake plants and ZZ plants need a different mix?
Because they're built to survive drought, not abundance. Both store water internally the snake plant in thick rhizomes and roots, the ZZ in potato-like underground tubers called rhizomes. In the wild they grow in lean, rocky, fast-draining ground and simply wait out dry spells using their stored reserves.
Put that biology in a pot of moisture-hoarding mix and you get a plant sitting in water it doesn't want, with roots and rhizomes that rot easily when waterlogged. The plant's entire survival strategy assumes the medium dries out. If it never does, the plant fails slowly, invisibly, from the roots up.
What kills snake plants and ZZ plants?
Overwatering, almost always but "overwatering" is really a medium problem as much as a watering one. The usual chain:
- Plant plugged into dense, cocopeat- or soil-heavy mix that holds water for days.
- Owner waters on a schedule, the way you would a thirsty plant.
- Rhizomes sit wet and never get the dry period they need.
- Rot sets in underground. By the time leaves yellow, soften, or fall, the damage is well advanced.

Structure and drainage first, moisture-holding a distant second. A good blend for these plants is dominated by coarse, mineral, air-creating components:

Monsoon is the danger season. High humidity and damp air mean pots dry out far more slowly for weeks at a time. A mix that's safely fast-draining in May can stay wet for days in August. Hard water leaves deposits. Indian tap and borewell water is mineral-heavy. In a free-draining mix you can water thoroughly and let the excess flush salts out the bottom; in a dense mix those salts accumulate around the rhizomes. - Use a pot with drainage holes non-negotiable for these plants. Terracotta is ideal because it breathes and dries faster.
- Pot into a gritty, fast-draining mix; don't compact it.
